"Reclaiming a Lost Self"

Inner Child Work

When we are in a difficult or traumatic situation, when our nervous-system is overwhelmed and the situation had no resolution, a part of our self is frozen in this moment. As we live on, we experience situations, that somehow resemble the original situation (or so our nervous-system thinks) and our frozen younger self jumps in and tries to manage the situation and overrides our otherwise perfectly working adult self. We are wondering how it comes, that we don’t act as an adult and that we feel stuck in unwanted behaviour.

Reclaiming-a-lost-self is a visualization technique, where we meet the child (or older) traumatised self, that was left behind with our adult self. We tell the lost self, that we have grown up, survived, are capable (sometimes) and most of all know exactly what the lost self is going through. We offer love, understanding, hugs, protection or whatever the lost self needs. Then, adult self and lost self sit together and enjoy each other’s company. The lost self is invited to come and hang out with the adult self in their 'advisory board' or present moment. Finally, we ask, if the lost self has a message or special area of expertise.  After the visualisation we can in our minds eye visit and be with our new-found self whenever we wish.
